I start a painting with detailed renderings of piled weeds, twigs, and yard clippings that I collect. Visually the pile is striking in its chaos yet there is some inherent pattern and structure that I find through the journey of rendering. Second and third layers of paint depart from this untraditional still life into an atmospheric landscape by building up brushstrokes, line, and color. In the actual process of layering, there is an inherent cycling back, time and time again, which mimics the cyclical weeks, months and seasons building up the patina of a perennial timeline.
