To begin these paintings I collected natural “artifacts” from exploring and gardening and have collaged these to suggest atmospheres (compositions). (“Artifacts” are anything from root balls, piles of yard waste, leaves, pods, shadows, to curiosities that my children bring me.) I was inspired to look at the textiles of William Morris Graves as well as ancient fertility figures to visually direct choices regarding shape and symmetry as well as layering. The circle ended up forming a wreath to some degree in each painting. My intention was not to paint “wreaths” but I found this motif to be very fitting as it is an ancient symbol associated with strength or lineage, and also victory.
